    Potential Head probs..

So i JUST got off of work close to 2am. The car was running just as usual nothing funny. i was stopped at a sign and when i went to accelerate i was up to about 4300 as usual, shifted to second them BAM! thud thud thud thud thud and shakin like a polaroid...sounds like a blown head gasket like when my 318i did.

Im extremely pissed right now. Its dark, im hot, luckly i was able to cradle it home only a few miles keeping the car alive...but there is potential damage in that. hopefully the stupid bitch's bottom is fine.

After getting it home, i popped the hood and checked for hoses and any other random shit. nothing undone or out of the ordinary except for oil dripping from the oil cap. Opened the coolant reservoir, no mixture. open the oil cap...fuckin vapors out the ying yang. FUCK. pulled out the dipstick...fuckin more vapors! so coolant in oil, but not the other way around. hopefully the m20 bottom end is as robust as the m10 was. car wont start now as expected. looks like im gonna start my i swap sooner than expected :(

FUCK i gotta work in the am too sdlf;skdfjalksdfj

If the noises stopped when you were driving the car gently, I'd be inclined to suspect a drive line problem over a head problem. A head gasket problem bad enough to cause those symptoms should cause a pronounced miss at idle.

The vapors from the crank case aren't a good indication of whether there is a head gasket problem. A milky emulsion in the oil would be a firm indication.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

sorry to hear... did you try a compression test or leakdown to confirm??

well i just got back from the testing the car. hard time starting but finally got it. white smoke galore. car stalled out, opened oil cap and more white smoke. im not talking subtle either, that shit was coming out like i was seafoamin. idle was extremely rough like misfiring.

I definitely believe head gasket now. Also i had coolant in the reservoir when the car last ran, now the reservoir is completely empty; im thinking it burned up that night when sitting. gonna do a tear down in a few days or may sell it :(

thats what the white smoke is from, coolant in the cylinder.

nah the noises/roughness was present throughout the drive. i was flooring it to keep it alive in neutral but only would go up to 3k max.

one thing i did notice that should have thrown up a red flag. When i bought the car, i did see some milk on the oil cap. also coolant was low. refilled coolant drove around and coolant needed to be filled again. shit freakin head gasket is gone or going i thought. Well after a few days, no more milk, and coolant remained at the level i had it. changed oil and no more oil/coolant burning. Been like this for 2500mi since i bought it so i thought i was just freakin out for nothing; especially since i been through the whole head gasket shit before.

definitely go off of your first instinct! if it doesnt feel right, prolly isnt.

my thoughts exactly. i should have some clean pistons now though. fuck all that seafoamin noise :pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp::pimp:

While the milky emulsion under the cap could have been from a leaking head gasket, it could just as easily have been the result of the engine not being run hard enough, long enough, to get all of the engine up to the temperatures needed to boil off condensates. In a similar manner, the initial "use" of coolant could have been noting more than a bit of air in the cooling system that worked itself out.

The fact that you were able to drive it for 2500mi w/o problems tends to suggest that this is a new problem. Having said that, it is possible that a past overheat set the stage for this failure.

Pull the head and see what things look like.

why do you have to make so much sense? Since i had the car, it nvr went to the half way mark. just slightly above the blue. from what i was told, the PO rarely drove it anywhere. last big trip was to dc a few yrs ago.

i hope to god it isnt anthing else. not that a blown gasket is any better. my friend had a 240 that had a piston literally blow up. no signs of failure prior to the damage. no nonsense shit like running hot or rough riding. just going up a hill then bam, no power stuck on the side of the road. he did however had problems with the car getting hot but resolved those issues quickly. engine looked fine but could never get it to run again. we finally decided to tear down, and behold, destroyed piston #4

im just gonna say that god hates me...and that i was close in saying my head gasket blew...

                      enjoy!

                      :(

can anyone explain how something like this would happen? Gasket was completely fine. all other cylinders fine. Piston 3 has a freakin hole, burnt the exhaust valve clean off, melted the spark plug out, and scarred the shit outta that bore.

now im outta a car and money after buying a bunch of shit to put the 325i head on :( im thinking of abandoning e30s and going with a camaro again...

You have an eta? Don't lose hope, grab a good rotating assy from the wrecker and put it back together, don;t abandon us.

i was sooooo excited after gettin that fan clutch off and all the rusted exhaust nuts...only to be greeted with more agony :(

im really surprised to see that head gasket hold up. i believe this issue was the cause of my crazy slow acceleration

i mean look at that! how does one burn a freakin hole in a piston...STOCK???
