    Cracked head?

How often do you guys ear about cracked heads from over heating?

Idk if I have a cracked head or warped head?

I've redone the head bolts and changed the gasket since the over heating and oil is still mixing with the water!

Could the block be damaged ?

Did you have the head checked out before reinstalling? The head is more prone to damage since it's aluminum. Probably have a crack somewhere. Some shops use a dye to find exactly where. Block is probably fine.

Well yeah, it's a 20+ year old aluminum head. You would have been lucky if you got away with just a bad head gasket. Should have had it checked while it was off.

Did you even have the head resurfaced when you did the gasket?

In most cases, yes. At the least you need to have a shop check the head for warp and cracks.

Do you have to do it even if the head gasket didn't blow....like if you just swapped heads ?

A used head should always be checked. The only time that its is safe to install a head without having it checked is in the case of a brand new head or one that has just been rebuilt.

There's a place in Florida called Clearwater Cylinder Head, which will do a complete rebuild of the 885 for a flat $500 with a $25 two-way ship fee. Just used them for mine a month or so back. Thought the price was reasonable for a complete rebuild. As it turned out, my camshaft journals were pretty well ground down, so I opted for a brand new stock camshaft and a brand new casting. After all was said and done I wound up with a brand new head costing me $798. As a daily driver, for me it was worth it. The car sounds and feels like it did when I drove it off the dealer lot 21-years ago. I almost forgot what the car sounded like after years of rocker tapping.
