    M20 cai

Anyone ever try to mount an E36 carbon cold air intake on the M20, ie Gruppe M, Umnitza, BMC, RD Sport, etc...Just wondering if anyone has feedback, looking to install a CAI on my 1990 325i, but thought rather than going the traditional K&N route and fabbing up a heat shield, I might try a carbon intake and gain the heat shield as well as that wonderful E46 CSl style sound.

The only benefit you are going to get from a CAI on an M20 is a better engine sound. The factory air box is so good that there are no gains to be had there. And if all of the parts are in place it is already drawing cold air from behind the grill.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

What are your thoughts on the Miller CAI and MAF setup?

I'm not asking about how effective the CAI is, I know that, I'm asking whether anyone has tried to fit an E36 or E46 carbon style CAI on an E30 M20 engined car. If you are not answering this specific question, please comment elsewhere, I believe there are numerous threads regarding the effectiveness of an CAI. Thanks.

the shield has to cover the entire filter from any air from the radiator, or it won't do any good. I doubt any of those E36 kits will work well on an E30.

i think your looking or something like
            kamotors intake

or a filter but it must have a heat shield. i think a box would be more affective than just a barrier tho like he said^

I was thinking more like this, it's an RD sport Carbon CAI on my E34 M5, I was hoping to try one of their E46 325 carbon CAIs and see if it fits the M20.

This is the one I was thinking of, similiar to my M5.

                There is also this one:

Is it a stock M20? While it would look badass, your money would be better spent getting a Mark D chip and 19lb injectors (assuming it's stock) If you're able to fit something like you posted please provide some pics curious how this would look :)

has chip, headers, exhaust, ltw flwheel, cam, ... the usual
The stock M20 injectors are fine, no need for 19lb injectors

Again, I'm asking if anyone has tried mounting an E36 or E46 carbon style CAI.
I guess I'll have to give it a go and be the first.

It is not that good, for some reason people think it is the pinacle of engineering. I built a similar style airbox and made power improvements. It does a job of getting coolish air so if a new setup does the same but without the flow losses then it can be an improvement.

Have you considered the casto customs box. Its fiberglass but it can be done in carbon fiber if you really want it.
