    Mark D chip install fail

    So installed the Mark D chip out of an anti ESD bag, wearing a grounding strap, proper installation, etc. Key in on position, gross clicking sound- kind of like a quiet tazer or something to that effect. Back to on, clicking off. No start, but cranks. Reinstalled OEM chip and she runs beautifully again- so round two I did a really really slow install, just to see if I screwed something up. Identical symptoms, reinstalled OEM, runs great.

    I'm glad im still running fine- but I'd love my chip to work. Anyone had this problem? Do I have a fried chip?

    Checklist.
    -what ECU is the Chip for?

    -What ECu did you put it in

    -did you install backwards?

    -where did you buy the chip from?

      -This was one of the more "underlined" notes in the DIY I read, so I think I did it right. Not backwards if the notches are supposed to face the same direction. I checked before, checked after, and the notch in the direction it is is working with the OEM chip.

      -came with my car, from a reputable gentleman, to my knowledge never installed.


      Was I supposed to plug it in and wait 30 minutes for it to sync with everything? I waited 5 after hooking the battery back up the second time I attempted the install, but no dice.

        it's likely the '88 ix has a 153 ECU. AFAIK, there's no chip for those - and while I think it physically plugs in, you can't use a 1.3 chip in a 1.1 ecu.

        so yes, you need to read the # on the ecu. if it ends in 153, you need to find a 173 - they cost about $40.

        no you don't have to wait.
