Car turning off while goin down the road.

I just rebuilt my 88 325i from the head up and it has a check engine light code for afm. I was wondering if this could be the reason for the car shuttin off as it goes down the road? I need a new afm and would like a new ecu. So if you can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    Ashton.

how loud is your fuel pump?

double check your afm with known good afm. swap airboxes from a friends e30.

A loud pump is one that is having to work too hard or one that is dying.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Crank positioning sensors will do this all day long. Is it cleanly shutting off? or is it stumbling before shutting off?

i'd replace the pump. its $150 new on amazon and its something that you'd want to replace anyway if you are planning on keeping the car for awhile.

A bad CPS is an obvious suspect. But there are other possibilities. Start with the a new CPS and see what happens.

I would FIRST bypass the main relay, it is easily the most common failure for what you are describing.

Your fuel pump being noisy means it has more draw, that means your main relay is working even harder.

U know I had a very similar problem! It turns out it was the battery. It was over two yr old , and wasn't holding charge , and the clamps were loose. It never hurts to check
