    cant turn motor over by hand! (found out why)

    hey guys so i turned the motor over by hand when the head was off. but now that i have the head on i cant turn it over by hand. I pulled the belts off, checked the timing belt and its lined up with all the marks, but still cant turn it over. its in neutral, and the head seems to be the problem and cant seem to turn that over. is there anything else i should check? or why its so hard to turn the head.

    is it lined up with both marks?

    can you turn it over a little in both directions?

    is the car in gear?

      try it without spark plugs
      '87 325ic, powered by S50.

        pulled the plugs out last night. the timing marks are lined up. it is NOT in gear, its neutral. it seems to be the head thats really hard to turn

          if you have a 22mm wrench on the crank, you should be able to turn it over fairly easily.

          can you rotate it backwards and forwards a bit? or is it completely frozen?

            If you pulled the spark plugs, you won't have any compression and the engine shouldn't be difficult to turn over.

            Sounds like your cam isn't wanting to turn.

                If none of these other things work try turning the crank (gently don't force it ) until it wants to stop. Then try turning just the cam. On the interference motors if the timing isn't perfect the pistons will hit the open valves. If you find this works turn them one at a time untill your timing marks are aligned. Hopefully the cam bearing isn't frozen.

                  By the way if you put the head on without the crank mark aligned and the cam mark aligned you might be in a bit of a fix because you might not be able to get both marks aligned at all. That would mean taking off the head, aligning the marks and remounting it. Use a new gasket and bolts if you have to do this.

                    make sure crank mark is lined up AND #1 is tdc. i believe you could be 180' out.

                      When you put the head on was the mark on the crank hub aligned with the mark on the lower timing cover and the mark on the cam sprocket aligned with the mark on the head? If they were and you put on the timing belt without disturbing the alignment, the cam and engine has to be in time. The only reason that the engine won't turn over then would be if the cam is frozen in the head, or if you have the wrong head for the engine and the pistons are hitting the head.

                          the marks are lined up. when the head was resurfaced the guy who did it adjusted the valves and lined up the marks. its an 885 head out of 89 is and its going on my 89ix thats the right head right? i dont think the cam is frozen cause he would have to move it to adjust the valves.

                            You know if the marks are lined up and you have the belt on you should be able to turn it. What was the original problem that brought you to get a new head? I think I would take off the belt and make sure the intermediate shaft turns. If it does put the belt back on and make sure you didn't have it a tooth off or something. Take the crank around two complete revolutions and make sure when it's back to TDC the timing mark on the cam is aligned with the mark on the head again. If you still can't turn it take the head off and check the cam shaft turns and the crank turns.
