    hi idle grrrrr

ok, so it started last week, 4 days before g-fest. idle rose to 1400 and would bounce from 1400 down to 1000 for a split sec then back to 1400 rpm's. i have replaced with used but known working, tb and tps switch, mass air sensor, new intake boot, green idle control box thingy in glove box, coil, cts, icv, just had it tuned up so it has new cap, rotor, plugs, wires are good, all hoses and vac lines look to have no leaks to the naked eye as far as i can see. can't get to a smoke test till next week. the car runs better than it ever has since i've had it except for the high idle. what the hell else could it be if the smoke test yeilds no results?? it has changed somewhat today as now it dosen't surge but remains at 1400. when started cold she sits at 1000 and as she warms slowly climbs to 1400 where she stays. if you gun the throttle, she will momentarly drop to 1000 then back up.

    HELP

If the throttle body isn't sticking and it and the TPS are properly adjusted, a sitcky/bad ICV, intake leaks, or on an ETA a bad ICM are the suspects.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i just put a brand new 1 in. you meen the 1 that comunicates with the ecu correct? besides, even before this shit, she never idled at 1400, not even in the coldest of winter. if the smoke test dosen't show anything i don't know what i should do next.

Any throttle/cruise control cable/ linkage/cable issues I put on a strut brace and the idle went up, after an hour i realized the brace was pushing the cable behind the bracket on the manifold.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Be sure to check all the hoses, there's a couple below the throttle body.

My car has been throwing a CEL lately. I just replaced the o2 sensor as it was quite old. However, I still get the CEL. I also have a higher than normal idle, but only sometimes. This would suggest a vacuum or intake leak correct? I don't think it has to do with the fuel system if it is idling high. The on board diagnostics say that it is an O2 sensor related problem. There is a fair amount of gunk around a few of the injectors. Would the injector o-rings be a likely cause? Any other ideas?

doubt it, if the injector o rings where bad, i'm pretty sure u would be smelling fuel or actually see a leak.

Depends on where the o-rings are leaking. If they're leaking at the intake manifold you won't get a fuel leak, just vacuum leaking. The o-rings to the fuel rail will cause a fuel leak. A vacuum leak can give you a O2 error, lean air/fuel.

I smell fuel and have a high idle sometimes. It looks as if there is some gunk around the injectors. I am guessing that the o-rings are part of my problem. Any other ideas. Is there a diagram of vacuum lines anywhere? Or even a full list of everything that could cause an intake leak?

The complete list of possible causes of an intake leak is:

                        Intake boot
                        Throttle body gasket
                        ICV hoses & connections
                        Brake booster, hoses, and connections
                        Crank case breather hose
Evaporative control hoses, valve, and expansion tank
                        Fuel pressure regulator & hose
                        Injector seals
                        Valve cover gaskets & bungs
                        Oil filler cap
                        Dip stick o-rings
                        Oil return tube o-rings
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

That is quite a few. I can cross a few off as they are in good condition. Can the brake booster itself leak? Or just the hoses and connections?

                            The booster itsefl can leak.

Since several tiny leaks can add up to a sizeable leak, don't assume that you don't have leaks in parts that look to be in good condition.

Yeah, I am looking for a shop to do a smoke test, haven't found one. I just wanted a place to start looking.
