Plugs are 1 year old. 15,000 miles or so. Cylinder 1 with obvious blow by. Haven't done a compression test. If the rings are shot does that equate to lower compression? I motor with 220,000+ miles.
1 thru 3 look normal 4 and five look a little hot, so lean condition maybe and 6 has some buildup/ calcification so maybe lean and burning something other than fuel...
to answer your question yes. bad rings will lower compression. you can do a wet test to test the condition of rings. add a small amount of oil to the cylinder your testing then do the compression test. If you see a significant rise in compression it will give you an idea of how bad the rings are...
Turbo M42 Build Thread :Here Ig:ryno_pzk I like the tuna here.
Either the engine is running rich or it is burning oil. With 15k on the plugs I'd say the soot is mostly from fuel as oil would have produced much heavier deposits.
Contributors to running rich could be the O2 sensor, incorrect fuel pressure, bad ECT or cold running engine, leaking injectors, small intake leaks, bad AFM, partially clogged catalytic converters. I'd start by having a smoke test run to check for intake leaks, replace the O2 sensor if it has 100k on it, check fuel pressure, and make sure the engine is running at normal temperature.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Definitely burning/consuming oil.
O2 sensor 50,000 miles ago.
Engine temp perfect.
Basically been running the same for the last 5 years. New plugs in idles fine and runs strong. Head was refreshed 5 years ago so I'm sure it needs rings.
FPR age unknow
AFM original
Cat 5 years old
I suspect some small intake leaks as well. Gonna smoke it soon.
Gonna check the valve cover at cylinder 1 as well.
Thnx
If you've been burning oil for a while your 02 sensor is most likely shot, they don't like burnt oil build up. I'd say replace it again and deal with the oil consumption issue, or just accept that you will be replacing the 02 sensor regularly.
