    alternate to ICV-throttle body hose?

    Both the genuine BMW and aftermarket hose for this 1988 M20 ICV to throttle body application were too small and stiff, and split shortly after installation. A local mechanic suggested a VW(?) heater hose that has one end belled larger. Has anyone encountered this problem & found an alternative hose material/part?

    Mine is split and taped too. Would be a good candidate for a silicon hose if anyone made it.

    Bump, do u have more info about the vw replacement?

      Something is wrong with your airbox or intake. the valve is supported by the intake manifold, there should be no stress on that tube at all. it should last 10 years, easily.

        Was it a new OEM BMW part, or aftermarket?

        Maybe, but I am finding the aftermarket parts made for e30's are getting lesser quality every year. I recently changed all my radiator and heater hoses, noticing the t-stat housing to radiator hose (goes around alternator on early models) was kind of weird but seemed to match up in my hand. On the way home the very next day the temp started rising, got out to look at the hose cut by the alternator - not an easy thing to do since there's a bracket on the frame rail to hold it away. Put the old OEM one back on.

        EDIT: To add, I got rid of that bell hose and put a hose inside a hose, one fits the ICV perfect, the other fits the TB elbow perfect. Works fine until a snail goes on lol.

          Nando, when you went MS, did you keep the ICV system? Or can you ditch it once you use MAP, and control everything with software?

            yes. you can't control airflow with software. you can adjust idle somewhat with ignition advance, but without an ICV, cold starts really suck. unless you want to sit in your driveway for 10 minutes while it warms up every morning. :p

              HAHAHA! This is how both race cars are, no ICV, just a vac line going around the throttle plate and ignition idle.

              I thought the MS could control PWM IAC's, though. I know when I had an MS in 06 or 07 it couldn't control a stepper motor back then, and we would just either crack the plate or some would run a Ford EGR valve for idle.

                yes MS supports 2 and 3 wire PWM

                yeah, fine for a race car. sucky at 5am on your way to work when it's 40f outside. plus it's stupid easy to setup.

                  The stress is only due to the rubber hose inside diameter being too small on both ends; the hose has to stretch too much at initial installation. The new genuine BMW part (shown) and the aftermarket have the same dimensions and the same problem. They are considerably smaller ID than the original take-off part. P/N matches between new and old.
