How many misfire threads to we need? 1 more.... Calling the guru's. SOLVED!
I had a bit of a similar issue that the OP had. For me it was a combination of two things. I took a grounded screw driver and found the spark plug wires arcing. I also took off what looked to be a brand new distributor cap and rotor after hearing spark jumping inside the cap. Replaced with a new Bosch rotor button and Bremi cap and STI wires and runs fabulous. YMMV
I haven't changed the harness. My grounds look okay. No corrosion and good contact. It's started doing the sometimes it does it every time, some days it won't at all again. Today I determined it does it on WOT, or partial throttle. No difference.
Sigh. Might just boil down to it. I really don't want to do the harness though. So those who have asked, nope. no luck yet. Might as well swap harnesses. IF the other one I have is good too....
Just wanted to bump this up for the guys who asked if I'd figured it out.
11 days, not a hiccup.
Valve cover gasket... who knew. Maybe it really was leaking a fair amount of vacuum, even though the old one was still in one piece and looked just fine, leaking only what seemed to be a little bit of oil.
this is kind of old but did the valve cover gasket really fix it? or was it temporary?
I had the same symptoms and replaced about the same number of things, but just replaced my plug wires today and seemed to fix it.

I am having this same issue.. Mean backfire, power falls flat, following a big puff of smoke. m50 nv boosted Ms 2. Found oil in 2 cyl. Going to replace the leaky valve cover gasket asap and buy new plugs. Hopefully this is the issue.
