    Anyone running 5w40 M1 in their M20?

I've always run M1 15w50 and my car has never consumed oil. Since it's not avail. anymore I've tried running Castrol Hypuron 15w40, but now my engine is losing oil.

I've pulled the plugs and their clean. I have a "sweat" from my HG that will be addressed with an OEM bmw HG replacement if the HG is the only culprit (not that VR garbage). If not, I'll be replacing the motor.

Since the M1 5w40 is full syn and is recommended for diesels, i was thinking this would be a suitable upgrade that won't be consumed?
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

the weight is too thin for my taste especially if your up north in BC (Vancouver). I'd say 10w40 would be best and should be available. If not maybe try going 20w50 (thats what I run, but I live in California, so it never gets as cold as it does in BC) something like Castrol GTX High Mileage or Valvoline VR-1 (VR-1 is what I use as it has higher concentrations of ZDDP which our valvetrain love!). It should be easy to get Castrol GTX High Mileage in 10w40. :)

They phased out M1 15w-50??? are you sure? You can try it and see how it does. Certainly wouldn't hurt anything. If you can't deal with it then switch to a good dino 20w-50 Castrol GTX or VR1.

Stanley, if you live in the GVRD there are plenty of sources for good quality 15w50 like Motul and LubriMoly. Try looking into that before trying various other grades of oil. I use Motul 15w50 in my own car with zero issues so far

M1 5w40 has a little less ZDDP than their 15w50 (and no, it hasn't been discontinued - it's back in some wal*marts now, with a full rollout next year).

honestly, it doesn't get *that* cold around here. I wouldn't be heartbroken about running a 15w50 all year round. also, *one* time in a walmart up in canada I found the 5w50, which is perfect for a winter M20..
