It's all depend on how you drive. Race the car? Rev to the limit? For daily driver like myself and oil change every 3000 - 4000 miles then it really does not matter which brand to buy. They most likely come from the same refinery. I have been using 5W30 (yes, it is cold in Wisconsin) all my life and have not had any issue. People have been making fun of me for putting that type of oil in my car, but I am still driving mine and those people are already onto their fourth car or so.

                    Which ones? Motul?

Euro parts stores. There's a few independent ones in Portland. Cheap parts and no shipping charges too.

                      Kendal GT (Vintage) 20W50 1229 1415 2408 SE 11/05 DINO Blackstone

This oil is not available today as Kendal GT (as far as my research has shown). I ended up using Brad Penn Grade 1 20/50 based on conversations with guys that run spec e30's and 2002's here in the Midwest. In regards to the old school Kendall GT, Grassroots Motosports stated the following:

"Our Porsche is getting close to rejoining the living, but there was one more thing to pick up: motor oil. When it comes to air-cooled Porsches, opinions abound—ranging from “it doesn’t really matter” to “use the wrong oil and your entire family shall perish.”

So we asked our engine builder what to do. Back in the day, he was loyal to Kendall GT-1—this was the original formula, identifiable by its unique green color. Today’s Kendall brand is owned by Conoco/Phillips, and their GT-1 oil uses a different formula.

The original Kendall GT-1 was known to work well with air-cooled Porsches. Its logo could even be found on the Brumos race cars. Its high-zinc formula has also made it a recent favorite among owners of other older cars.

Since our time machine is out for service, we did the next best thing and ordered up some Brad Penn oil. American Refining Group, the parent company behind Brad Penn, purchased Kendall’s Pennsylvania refinery in 1997. The oil sold today under the Brad Penn brand can be called the spiritual successor of the original Kendall GT-1."

So...what does zinc do to the engine at ppm? Lower grade oil might have the same amount of zinc, but the company probably did not want to have additional cost of testing for zinc concentration.

I use whatever comes in the "17 oil change" deal at autozone. Hell, at least I'm changin' it. And my car is mui scheisslich. A Mobil1 oil change would probably represent 5% of the value of my car.

On page 3 of this thread I posted a link to research done by LN Engineering on engine oils. It will answer your question on zinc. The very very short answer is, higher levels of zinc are better for motors designed 30 years ago. But there's more to it than that.

I order my oil from Autowerks of America. They have a website but they don't have oil/fluids listed on the site. It's easiest to call 1-888-4awerks to order it.
