    But you are just overpaying for a "kit" that's not even complete, and the one special part you need (spacer) is junk.

    i got a $300 port job here in Oz which was very reasonable. Obvioulsy parts are extra but you may not need a whole lot deopending on what you start with

    IIRC when I rebuilt my head it fell short a little shy of $850... but that didn't include porting. And to be fair, I pinched every penny. Got a brand new 272˚ cam for $80.

    get it independantly flow tested for the benefit of the community?

    Obviously flow numbers dont mean everything but you do need a certain amount of flow to make a certain amount of hp and it would be good to see what they are able to do.

    bigger the better with the crank midrange always comes in handy more so than pure topend for street engine. I would not go IE kit , firstly the pistons are flat tops which don't go aswell with the 885 head. BMW didn't redesign the B25 pistons and chamber for fun. The best option for pistons IMO is JE for 885 head as they can do the proper squish , others like CP might also be able if you supply a piston. If you use a smaller crank 81mm or 84mm you can utilise the stock pistons.
    MM pistons are better but also don't seem suited to the 885 as well as they could.
    You could also use flat tops with the 731 but it requires much more port work to be worthwhile.

    A fully built head that we would do to our American v8 heads at work would consist of:
    New valves, re-cut valve seats, new copper valve guide liners, valve guide hone, surface, port and polish with flow bench testing, valve springs, roller rockers and other small bits like stem seals, collets etc.
    Our ohc m20 heads have a bit more parts to replace such as camshaft and lifters. And bmw parts are a bit more expensive than your average 350 Chev or Ford Cleveland

    Already on my way to finding a 330 crank and buying MM pistons. If I have the money. What do you mean by 'fully=built'? Machined, ported, with new valves, springs, and rockers? I think you can do that for under $800.

    Go to MM site and read the PDF on m20 motors. Everything you need to start your journey is there. There are many ways to skin this cat, but all the right ways involve time, friends, and money. understand when you go bigger, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul in some aspects. An 885 head wont take to porting and polishing as well as a 323 head will, which adds more to the equation. Do not use super eta pistons if you are wanting NA power, that dog will not hunt. Yes you will save money, but you will have a low copression motor that doesn't build power the way a custom piston'd one will. Save your money, research what you want. You may fine (like many here) that an m50 or s50 swap is the way for you to go and still maintain a low budget.
    I am building my m20 bc I love the motor itself. Yes, it has it's problems, and it is limited, but that sound is magical. Listen to Der Affe, Nando, Mr 325, and most of the other OG's on this topic. They know their shit, and understand the limitations of an M20.
