I still want to know how you were able to drop a pencil in one of those holes... It had to have been a perfect throw to get it to actually fall in.

Nah, that was just a demonstration of Murphy's law.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i was board waiting for fedex to arive with my head gasket so i started poking around,

basicaly broke the golden rule and didnt use protection when sticking my pencile into dark holes

but that aside can i just take the crank gear off and take that cover off that sits at the front of the engine behind the largest gear instead of the oil pan

That won't be of any help. The pan has to come off to get the pencil out.

If the head is off, it's not a whole lot more to pull the rest of it. Then you can put it all together outside the car, which is a lot easier.

Maybe try taking the drain plug out and keep pouring oil down through the block. Then hope the pencil lines up and flows out with the oil (or atleast finds its way to the drain plug hole were you can try and move it). My 2 cents(i have 0 experience with ix's so i dont know were the drain plug is or if its possible), i think its worth trying...

Go to harbor freight and buy one of these.

                            Then go fishing.

Even if it doesn't work, spending $10 and trying it will be better than jumping to the worst case. (Pull the engine)

I'm not going to lie, your opening post gave me a good laugh... However I paid for my laugh with a contribution!

taking the head off isn't going to get the pencil out. You need to remove the oil pan.

Like he says ^ worth the few bucks to try..
