I know it's a stretch but worth 15 min or so of ur time before pulling the pan, take a very strong magnet and swipe the pan in hopes that the little piece of metal around the eraser gets attracted to the magnet and maybe you can drag it over to the drain hole and slide it out. I suppose filling it w/ oil then draining it may "float" the pencil to the drain hole area allowing you to attempt to extract it from there, again quite a stretch but conceivably could work, good luck

but no, taking off the front timing cover will not get you access to the pencil. Besides, the crank bolt is torqued to over 300ft/lbs, even if it was possible to get access that way, it would be MUCH easier to just take the pan off.-Alex
