    Turbo M20

Trying to do some research on these.

I'd really like to hear from anyone that is running a turbo set up. And i'm not really interested in a bolt-on set up, but a true rebuild.

Where did you get your internals from?
Where did you get you get your turbo kit from?
What kind of boost pressure and compression ratio are you running?
What kind of a ECU are you running/will a WAR chip work?

Also, what's the cost of a build like this? I'm trying to get a reliable 250HP from an M20, is it possible?

    Thanks

250 HP in M20 is really easy !

Just refresh your motor with new stock internals, O-Ringing the block, shaved pistons

    GT35r
    666 fab. manifold
    F38 TIAL WG
    BOV
    IC + 2.5'' piping
    3" Exhaust

you can use the stock motronic if your goal is near to 250HP , with 24# injectors, FMU, chip and AFM from m30 ..

This should works good @1 bar of boost

There are a few things that don't add up here. I agree that stock internals, OEM headgasket and ARPs are required for a minimum build. O-rining the block, forged rods/pistons, welded head and other upgrades are only necessary for high power or the extremely safe-concious.

The most important part of the build is going to be in the tune. I've never understood how anyone can over look this part and slap a chip in that gives hardly any control over fuel and ignition. You're adding in another huge variable with forced induction and not handling it. Stand alone management with hours upon hours of research and trial and error are required to do it yourself. Or you can take the stand alone to a tuner and let them deal with it, which would be much more expensive but necessary if you're not comfortable with tuning.

Power goals and boost goals are independent of each other. 1 bar of boost may make 300whp on one setup and 400whp on another. Always shoot for a power goal that you think the motor can handle then adjust boost/tune until you're there.

With that said I run Megasquirt II/e with the full version of tunerstudio for my ecu. Holset H1C, 666 fab adapter, Tial BOV and wastegate, Mishimoto intercooler and Bosch 42lb injectors. I spent months tuning the car to the point that I was happy with it and feel like it will last a while. It's been almost a year without any issues.

there are tons of threads regarding boost, and if needed take a look over on e30tech which will have even more info. everything you need is here, all you have to do is SEARCH.

250whp is very easy a basic refresh will work. Start searching and reading, there is a complete FI subsection on the forum!

Okay I'm looking into places, where should I buy the turbo kit and intercooler from? VAC offers a kit, but thats $5100 bucks! CX Racing has one for about $1000, but I'm a little concerned about the quality.

              There is no kit.
              Put the "kit" together yourself.

The only things from eBay you should ever consider is the intercooler, piping, anything silicone, and certain manifolds if you want to save a little.
Everything else like replica turbo's, most oil coolers, most wastegates, SS lines, fittings, BOV's and hardware are horseshit.

You're right, Derick does have a kit.
Manifold is unknown, turbo is unknown, wastegate is unknown, ebay intercooler, bybass valve is a unit from an audi/porsche I believe.
Everything else is stuff you could normally get on eBay and whatnot.
Stainless Steel Tubular Turbo Manifold Adapter
                  Fully Programmable EMS
                  High flow fuel injectors
                  Front mount intercooler
                  Bypass/Recirc Valve
                  E30 Specific LC-1 Wideband O2
                  T3 Turbocharger
                  Externally Wastegated
2.5" Stainless Mandrel Bent Downpipe (upgradeable to 3” +$125)
                  V-Band Exhaust Flanges
                  8psi Adjustable
                  Complete Bolt-On kit
The only thing I'd put money forward for from the kit is what's in this picture:

                  EMS, injectors, LC1

The kit doesn't come with must-have hardware, lines, and fittings.
The reason it's $3k(?) is because all the labor of finding stuff you need is done for you right here. I'd rather put the time needed in researching and understanding what I want and need and put a quality kit together myself so there is nobody to blame BUT myself.
I hope I didn't come off disrespectful in any manner, Derick is a great dude, I just needed an example of "kit" to explain things. :o

                      250whp?
just put a new HG and some head studs on there, if you want it done cheap get all ebay stuff and then find a holset turbo for cheap...
get a turbo chip from TCD and a RRFPR. thats the oldschool and proven way to do it, they didn't always have stand alone.

stock, as in just turboing it on a fresh HG and NO HEAD STUDS, you could run a reliable 6-8psi all day and likely see numbers of where you want, and that butt dyno will probably feel like way more.

do you want a fun dd or a fully built corvette eating bmw beast? one is gonna be yours for under 1500, the other, well, if you have to ask...lol

You would be surprised how easy it is to build 250hp
out of a motor with 190,000+/- miles

Stock internals, new head gasket, metric blue head bolts
30lb injectors, MegaSquirt w/ turnerstudio (find Keith WhoDwho)
MonkeyMadness flange kit, M21b24td manifold, 60trim turbo
                        Volvo intercooler...;)

But you'll burn you clutch so look into getting a new one stage 1 or 2

                        good luck..
