As an FYI, you CAN sneak the cam in and out with the engine in the car without removing the head. The single valve springs are supposedly good to 6000 RPM. I did this back in 96 when I didn't have much money and i parts were expensive. It ran fine. You can also use any Motronic 1.1/1.3 computer 525,380,173 etc, just try to stay away from the 153 (early M1.1). It's all plug and play.
What motor do I have? 1988 325

are far as m20's go, you got the good one!
with the i head swap you have tq of the eta but the HP of the i motor. best of both worlds.
and you keep stock compression regardless.
throw some 17# injectors, a performance chip, and some new plugs and wires cap/rotor and have a blast manComment

Can you elaborate on swapping the Cam with the head installed? I dont really see how you can do this.... dont you need to take the rockers and rocker bars out? I had a hard enough time doing this with the head removed on a work bench! As an FYI, you CAN sneak the cam in and out with the engine in the car without removing the head. I must say that I didn't personally do it but my buddy (BMW Tech) did so I know it can be done. I believe he had to remove the headlight or radiator for clearance and the rocker arm retainers so you can slide them over. That's the only way I can think of. I don't remember if my engine was in or out of the car when it was done though."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

They are out of the M50 from an E36 325i.
It is probably possible to get all of that out without removing the head if he was to lift the front of the motor a little bit. Honestly I would just buy a good rebuilt 885 head and throw that on there instead.I must say that I didn't personally do it but my buddy (BMW Tech) did so I know it can be done.
