    dads overheating m20

alright guys i have an e30 of my own, but so does my dad. im trying to figure out what would cause this type of overheating problem. so as the car is idling in the middle of traffic the temperature slowly creeps up, as soon as you press the gas and begin moving, it cools down, but not to mid temp, just a hair before 3/4. once you turn the car off and let it cool, for about 20 minutes it and come back and turn it on its still at mid temp.

i tested the fan clutch, and it works fine tore the newspaper to shreds.

if it cools down as soon i begin driving wouldnt that also mean the waterpump is doing its job?

also i turned up the heat to see if it would cool it down even the slightest bit, not even that.

any suggestions as to what it would be?

im thinking its probably the thermostat, or radiator

u could have a clog somewhere. clogged radiator. clogged thermostat housing.

if it were me. i would try just removing the thermostat, and allowing the coolant to run freely.

if the temperature is still staying at 3/4.

u might have a partial clog in the radiator.

and your fan clutch/water pump might still b bad.

also. possibly try just bleeding the air out of the system.

when it starts to creep up in temp when stopped its usually the fan, try tuning on the ac when it starts getting hot, that will turn the aux fans on and if that makes it cool down you know you have a airflow problem

If your engine is cool and the temp gauge still reads 1/2 mark then your SI board/batteries could be bad.
