Crankshaft Front Seal

Any advice for removing the front crankshaft seal with the engine up on a stand? Most everything I have read about it deals with the engine in the car.

Removed the jesus bolt yet? 300 ft/lbs you know.
A good impact wrench may help. You will need a long breaker bar attached to a crank holding tool. The tool should bolt into the holes for the vibration dampener.

You should use some Loctite red(270) on the threads for re-installation once its off if you cannot achieve 300 ft/lbs for some reason.

that bolt is a hell of a thing to get off, i've used a 3/4" impact gun to get them off and when that was not available, i used a breaker bar with a cheater pipe on it and shoved an oak axe handle between the block and a crank counter weight to hold it from turning, cause a regular 2x4 crushed.

This is a case of where having the right tool for the job is important. When you use the crank holding tool the lever for restraining the crank is next to wrench you apply torque with.

I don't have impact tools, so the cheater bar is my only choice. I DO have a crankshaft holder tool that I've used for years that bears against the starter gear, but I'm concerned that the ring gear just doesn't look that strong. (Maybe I'm just used to cast iron gears.) I like the idea of shoving a handle against a crank throw. That could take some excess stress off the ring gear.

The crank nut is a standard thread and I doubt you will get that tool on a loaner program. I got mine from bavauto cause they were the cheapest at the time and closer. Last I heard they were out of stock as SIR tools only makes them in batches.

Hmmm... I don't have time to wait for one to be made. I think I'll use my old crank holding tool at the starter ring, and maybe back it up with some sort of reinforcement, just to be sure. Then I'll put my wife on the end of a pipe for a counterweight. (Don't tell her I said that. I want it to be a surprise.) ;)

Makes you a tool that bolts onto the harmonic damper bolts and will do the job fine. Alternatively if you have the oil pan off you can put a 2x4 block between a crank throw and the block. That's what I did and it worked fine.

No harm in calling them to check as you could have it in a couple days...and not sure if we can keep THAT from your wife and miss her beating you..with a crank holding tool. Oh the irony

Adrian, I like the way you think, and it just so happens I am on my way to Lowe's in just a few minutes. I have a couple of pieces of angle iron on hand, but it's 2x2, so a trifle too big for the task at hand. :up:
