    M20 rocker shaft oil galleries.

which way is it suppose to line up? it looked like the big galleries line up in the eyelits and the small ones run horizontally where the rockers go, and then the slit is suppose to line up with the fire wall side of the rocker arms

it only fits in one way, look at the ends they have a cut out for the bracket thing that holds them in place.#6 the cut outs face into each other.

That "bracket" is the thrust plate that goes at the front of the engine. However, there are slits on the rocker shafts for the thrust plate on both ends and both rocker shafts are identical.

The difference is...pay attention...the hole spacing on the shafts is not symetrical from end to end...SO...2 identical shafts installed parallel but one will be flipped end to end.

The point is, the lube holes for the rocker arms on the exhaust valve shaft have to be offset from the rocker lube holes in the intake shaft.....since the intake and exhaust valves are also offset (meaning they are not inline ACROSS the head). The large holes should point down to line up with the galleys coming up through the support towers & the thrust plate should keep them in that position.

Lay the shaft on the head so the rocker lube holes line up with the valves and its obvious which way the shafts go in....or just look at the pic above that I forgot was there as I typed this :-)

          one more question,
once the rocker shafts are in with the cam and rocker arms what is a good way to slightly rotate the rocker shaft? my exhaust rocker shaft seems to be off by about 5-10 degrees towards the cam.

          :/

Remove the thrust plate, loosen the eccentrics and use a channel lock plyers to rotate it.

As for your opening question. I bet you replaced the rocker shafts and then read the bently to see if you did it right :b. The bently makes it sound confusing but if the were installed wrong it would be obvious by the oil holes not lining up with the rockers.

Have someone hold the shaft stationary then rotate the car

No Bentley over here :/ I just looked at the previously worn marks on the rocker shafts and sized them up with the shaft galleries and the valves with the rockers and just prayed the large galleries lined up on the bottoms, but I accidently put rockers in before cam so I had to redo it.

I would not recommend using channel locks to turn the shafts or any othe type of plyers that could leave marks or gouges on the shafts. I use an allen wrench or small screw driver in an oil hole to rotate. putting a gouge on the shafts will damage the rockershaft bushings and cylinder head during the next removal.

i was thinking the same, i wonder if theres a rubber alternative to use..... all rockers are on shaft and the oil galleries are all undercover :/

As long as there is no valve spring pressure on the rockers the shaft should not be that hard to rotate, just like when you remove it. You probably need the spring clips off too, although if the shaft is off centre I dont know that those would have even gone on.

If you can't do it by hand use a piece of leather to protect the shaft...and remember its hollow dont squeeze too hard.

yeah i cycled it through with a wrench on the cam and i dont think there is a moment when all valves are closed unfortunately.
thanks for the advice ill be fixing it today :)

I need some advice on how to rotate my rocker shafts while they are inter valve spring pressure.
