m20 oil pump drive gear question.

I recently took my m20 apart after breaking down to find the oil pump drive gear held in only by the keyway, the bolt had worked it way loose. It was so loose it skipped teeth on the timing leading to bent valves.

After showing pictures someone alerted me to the cast gear that was on my car (1986 euro model) vs the updated m20 sintered gears.

I ordered a replacement and and was comparing it to the old one. It appears the new gear does have a keyway for the washer but there is no pin to hold it in place. First of all, do I even need this guide pin? If the purpose of this washer was to be a washer, it would still be centered on the gear from the bolt.

Can I use this, or do I need a different washer/ dowel pin to use this gear?

Here is the diagram from realoem.

And I have attached the two gears below. Can I somehow remove the dowel pin from the old gear and put it into the new gear?

    Thanks

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

The dowel pin, assuming this is the cam sprocket, is critical. I can't say whether you can get the pin out of the earlier sprocket, but you can order part number 11311716040 and put it into the cam.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks Jim, however I am not talking about the cam sprocket pin. I am talking about the number 9 gear in the above picture, not number 2.
The second picture above shows components 9, 14, and 15.

It appears the Dowel pin on the 1986 325iX is part Number 07119942079 and the 1991 pin is the same 07119942079.
The Washer is part number: 11311714795 for both applications
The gear is part number: 11311717398 for both applications.

My research suggests the gear and washers were updated in all BMWs catalogs but were not recalled to replace them, or a few somehow were missed. So back to my original question, would the gear be installed incorrectly without a keyway for the washer piece? The gear would still be centered due to the keyway, but the washer could theoretically rotate around without a centering keyway.

You've got it. The dowel that is cast into the gear engages with the intermediate shaft. Install the washer with the hole over the dimple as a visual reference for future inspections to tell if the washer has spun.

The washer won't rotate in any case. I remember if the later dowel protrudes through the sprocket, but I sort of think it does.

There is not a separate dowel pin for the intermediate shaft sintered replacement gear..just the nub that is cast in to the gear.
