    Gassy Smell inside the car

Hello, I have an 85 528e. Occasionally there is a gassy smell inside the car and it appears the mileage is down. I have checked for leaks and have not been able to find any. Any thoughts on whats going on.

did you have mexican food the previous night? Maybe you have a leak at the headers before the O2 sensor

Check your fuel lines. If you have not replaced them then you should. They are probably filled with cracks.

IIRC, your almost sitting under the fuel filter. Since it has gotten a bit cold in our neck of the woods, tighted the fittings that connects to the filter.

Engine fuel lines and fuel filter lines. Replace them. Worth a piece of mind alone.

If the smell is gasoline - Inspect, Inspect, Inspect!!

Loose clamps or leakage where a clamp has perforated a rubber line are common.

Metal portions of the fuel lines can rust and begin seeping, especially where they make the turn to go up towards the engine. It may never reach the ground since gas evaporates quickly.

If your rubber lines are original, now would be a good time to think about refreshing all of them. Having the high pressure fuel line burst while the fuel pump is putting 30 pounds of pressure into it can lead to some very exciting times (ask me how I know).

Add a fire extinguisher to your trunk. Most come with brackets so you can mount it on top of the battery box. It can literally make the difference between a minor issue and totalling your car.

If the smell is exhaust - leaky exhaust manifold gasket, cracked manifold, loose joints, really anything is possible. While the car is running quickly cover the tailpipe(s) and see if the car bogs down (good) or if there is a hissing sound elsewhere in the system indicating a leak.

Make sure your trunk and taillight seals are in good order. Not only important fo keeping water out, but in some situations exhaust can be drawn back in to the car.

I think I paid $31 for 5m of OE 8x11 FI hose (thats 16ft for those of you who don't speak metric) from autohausaz.

It's enough to do 2.5 cars & if you throw in 2 fuel filters you get free shipping so just split it with a friend.
