Its a little tricky removing the valves , i used a 30 year old plus spring compressor but i removed all the valves in like 30 minutes , you just have to make sure you lining up both sides correctly , i would go with putting new valve guides in . i did on my engine rebuild and all the head work cost
260 for the guides installed and a 3 angle valve job ,cleaning, pressure test
i had to put the rockers back in , you should give your intake a light port to match to the gaskets while you have your valves out it will be the only time you can do it and its totally worth the experience

Isn't it better to trim the gaskets to fit the ports instead of the other way around?

We are up the same shit creek without a paddle, I'm a bit further along with this tedious endeavor though, when I did my valves I just bought a C-clamp and spark plug socket from harbor freight and cut a window in the side of the socket. Worked pretty good.

I ended up finding a rental that worked great (Advance Auto Parts), but not before trying 3 different crappy ones. I really want her running this weekend though, I've got the head back together with new seals and ground seats, the motor is in time, and the belt is on. After putting the intake back on, it should be good to go. I'm never breaking a timing belt on an interference motor again. It sucks and I can't afford it.

This has been the longest month of my life. It only saw road for like two months after I put a 5-speed in it. I NEED her back!

I am about to have to pull my trans to fix a nasty leak, so I feel your pain.

Find the leak? My trans is leaking from the one thing I didn't replace: the detente plate on top of the tail end. I think my rear main is leaking too which is BULLSHIT because it wasn't leaking when I did my manual swap. Put a new National in there perfectly and now there's a little drip of oil hanging on underneath the bell-housing. So mad I can't even fathom. When is it fair for preventative maintenance to bring problems SOONER?

Could be running back there from an oil leak somewhere on the motor. I though my rear main was bad too but oil was just running down the edge of the pan

SHE'S RUNNING!!! The idle is kind of shitty (probably a vacuum leak, my brake booster hoses look cracked now) and I'm bleeding a bitchy cooling system, but she runs and drives. Thank you everyone for all your advice!
