My understanding is that the o2 sensor wouldn't make the car completely cut out, just run like crap. Not only that, I don't know if it'd make sense that the car runs totally fine with the diagnostic cap if it's a bad o2 sensor.

When the engine cuts out does the tachometer needle drive towards zero when the transmission is in gear and the car moving? That could mean a DME shutdown, in which case you should also see the CEL. Or it could mean a problem with timing data from the CPS. But if the tachometer doesn't react I might suspect leakage in the cap involving pin 1, which goes to the ignition coil.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Wouldn't hurt to spray the pins/sockets in the diagnostic cap with contact cleaner...
