Can you run an m20 with no thermostat in the thermostat housing?

Just curious, I feel like mine is not functioning properly. Just tried to run it with no thermostat, left the o ring in for water sealing action ;)

As soon as I turned the car over it was making a weird zingy noise, sounded like the fan was hitting plastic but it wasnt, pretty sure it's due to the lack of thermostat.

Unless you're in some smokin' hot desert, I don't think it will get to operating temp. That is if the pump is pumping and the radiator isn't clogged.

yes you can. enjoy the car never getting to full operating temp tho. Its a real pain in the ass and can sometimes effect fuel mileage.

in the past, i would just gut the thermostat. Taking the valving out but leaving the "ring" or empty housing to add the restriction the system was designed for.

Works well with turbo motors in the summer/spring time. The only issue i had was when i would normally drive the car on a cooler morning, it wouldnt stay at operating temp. It would cool way down. But nothing a couple gear pulls wouldnt fix.

The car will never go into open loop mode (where the sensors change fuel delivery and timing). So you can expect generally shitty mpg readings and really rich exhaust fumes.

Last time I checked this part was like 30€.
Even if its 50$ you will save the amount on fuel very quickly.
I'd just swap it for a new one.

It also reduces your ABSOLUTE cooling ability, as there'll always be some coolant leaking
past the radiator in the bypass hose, whereas the thermostat will, eventually,
divert ALL water there when things get really hot.

But no, it shoudln't make any funny noises...
