    Oil leak question

    So im trying to track down my oil leak on my 93 e30 m20 cabrio. The oil is leaking out between the trans shield and bell housing of the trans, it isn't dripping down from above because i just replaced head gasket and valve cover gasket ext. It leaks when at rest slow dripping which forms a baseball sized oil spot in a 24 hour period. So i believe it is either the Rear main seal or the rear half of the oil pan gasket with is covered by the trans shield. I read somewhere before that at rest the oil level isn't high enough to leak out of the Rear main seal is this true? If so that leaves the oil pan gasket as the culprit. Im going to remove the trans shield covering the oil pan next time i visit the car and hopefully ill be able to see the cause.

    Appreciate any help/ opinions.

    That may be true, however you could be throwing oil out the seal into the bellhousing while driving and then when you park it drains out the weep hole.

        dye may not help given the closeness of your suspects but its worth the $6 to try.

            Update for anyone leaking from same location. Ended up being brake fluid from my slave cylinder, it was a slow leak and didn't notice any loss of brake fluid or clutch issues until a month later, when i had the car parked for a snow storm and the clutch went to the floor and had zero pressure and I noticed my brake fluid went down. Replaced Slave cylinder and no more leaks. Dirt and grime made the fluid appear to be motor oil.
