Sad to see this m20 Like This

My friend wanted to takle a timing belt change on his own, in the process of all the hoses off and trying to find TDC he gave up and brought it to a shop to install the already purchased parts. He drops it off and they install it and call after saying spark plug in cylinder #4 blew out… They put a heliocoil and say theres no compression in it and say they need to remove the head because theres a bent valve, to find this:

went to a reconditioning head shop and he said theres nothing to do if a spark plug hole os cracked but buy a new head...i told my friend he needs to order a new head now and a new piston, engine has 250k on it but its a good body with minimal rust spots, only the battery tray suffers a bit. Worth fixing is the main question here or should he get another m20/ or part out, maybe sell the car completely. If he used that piston I'm pretty sure the compression would blow a hole in it right? Trying to figure out the cheapest way possible to get this body on the road again.

CAR RAN 100% perfect before the timing belt change was tackled….

whats the likely hood of the crankshaft being bent from the pressure the piston put on it while hitting the valve?

piston will act like a fuse and disintegrate before you hurt the crank

Did your freind want change the timing belt due to it running terrible or did the car run fine before taking it apart??

If it ran fine then is the shop responsible for the busted valve and engine replacement?

Just curious as the description of events is not entirely clear as to what happened.

ran great which leads me to believe it was also the shops fault… the car was purchased off a old lady who had it sitting in he garage for 6 years before he bought it so he was in the process to putting in the hoses and fluids and he decided to do the timing belt at the same time.

Yeah, what caused the valve to hit the piston? If the engine was running fine before hand, it sounds like the mechanic had the timing off when they fired it up.

that would be really great man! Im hoping a new head with valves and a piston is all it needs, thats what my eyes are telling me anyway.

So the shop you took it to fucked it up. Tell them to buy you another motor and bring it somewhere that knows what their doing to install it.

I'm really leaning toward that answer too, i told my friend now the same. I feel that they might use the excuse "you brought it too us not running so it was like that before" when it defiantly wasn't, just had all the hoses off and some belts, including the old timing belt on it. IT WAS RUNNING JUST NEEDED TO CHANGE THE TIMING BELT TO AVOID THIS SORT OF DAMAGE! My friend must have messed the timing up, brought it to the shop to install the new belt and they never checked the timing and just threw on the new belt. I don't see how else it could have happened...

I told him, let's see what his response is. I told him that shop was crappy, I usually do this stuff with my dad (if it was my car) he's an airline mechanic.
