885 i Vs 885 Seta, STRAIT ANSWER PLEASE.

ok, so I have done a lot of reading, and I am still thoroughly confused.

I have a complete 885 Seta head. with SEVEN cam Journals. I have been reading that I need to drill oil passages, some say I don't, some people are saying the 885 seta are not real 885. so WTF IS IT?!?!?!:hitler:

I assume that a 885 is a 885, and all I need to do to have any kind of preformance is to change out the valve springs and cam.

if you're head has a 7 journal cam, then that is correct...
Just swap the cam and valve springs.

however to get the "i" performance you will still need to change the intake manifold, throttle body, airflow sensor, injectors and ECU

my Seta was the same way

If your 885 has 7 journals. You're good to go.
It's only if it has 4 that you need to drill.

      Plus what wilholl said.

A little clarity as I recently went down this path....

All 885 heads (i & Seta) have 7 cam journals. Some of the 885 heads for Seta have all 7 journals drilled. Some do not.

To use a 7 journal cam, if I remember correctly, all the journals on the intake side need to have oiling passages. The #4 journal on the exhaust side does as well.

On the 4 journal variant, #'s 1,3,5,7 have oiling holes on the intake side. #'s 3 & 5 have the oil holes on the exhaust side.

          Hope this helps...

Yes and to and confusion... one of my 885 (Seta) heads had a 4 bearing cam in it. So, 3 of the journals were not drilled at all.

thats how some of the early production SETA heads were but it seems most of the later ones have all 7 journals drilled.

is there a casting year where the cutting corners stop and the drill them all?

It wasn't that they cut corners, it was because they started using a 7 bearing cam instead of 4 bearing earlier cams.
The 4 bearing cam was originally used to reduce efficiency robbing friction as the eta engine was all about economy.
At least that is what I have been lead to believe based on my reading comprehension.
