M20 low on power - valvetrain?

Hey guys, recently purchased a 325ic and I have been out of the M20 game for a couple of years now.

It is dramatically low on power. Not where it wants to die ever, but just low. If you hold the throttle body open, the RPM's build up extremely gradually until it reaches the powerband where it then picks up pretty well. It idles rough, but strong.

On first impression it sounds like a vacuum leak, but the valvetrain makes a considerable amount of noise. Not the normal M20 tick, but a loud carbureted V8 type noise, the whole engine sounds like a very old V8. So with that I think the valves are extremely out of spec, but would that cause a considerable loss of power?

Adjust the valves, replace the plugs, check condition of cap and rotor. Just do the normal e30 tune up things.

If it sounds like a v8, it's potentially missing. You could try pulling off one spark plug wire at a time while it's running to see if they are all firing. That might speed up your trouble shooting.
