most people don't run them? what kind of hackjob E30s have you been unfortunately exposed to? :(

the spring is what sets proper tension on the belt. it's not needed once the tensioner is tightened down - but there's no way to accurately tension the belt without it.

yea its unfortunate, mine didnt have it when i bought my car and did the first timing belt i had ever done, and i know of a few spece30 guys not using them, as well of plenty of people on here. needless to say i use it now too.
although it is strange its not included in the timing belt kit (even just the spring would be smart as an old spring might lose its tension) and its like an extra dollar for the spring. damn shame

Does the BMA kit come with a spring in the tensioner? I'm about to order but I have to admit all the stuff in that kit for $95 bucks makes me nervous. How cheap can it be?

just look at the brands they have in there. I've always used continental timing belt. Also I would add 2-3 water pump gaskets. It is a bitch to set the waterpump in place with the tensioner spring pushing against you. Also take the advice of others and do the other gaskets while your in there. Easy to do while in there

sorry if i'm not understanding this correctly, but wouldn't you install the waterpump prior to having the tensioner and tbelt on? therefore no tensioner spring pushing against the pump.

Go open up the video link I just posted here for timing belt replacement. It should help.
