You mentioned upgraded valve springs but another option to remember is modifying the head to run a 325i cam. Then that's when you'd want to upgrade to the dual springs, and since you already have a 325i manifold you could also have the inlet ports matched to it. Maybe shave the head to bump the compression up, and along with a 1.3 motronic swap you'd wind up with a pretty nice 2.7i with a noticeable power bump without any loss in torque, and the bonus of not having to yank the whole engine out. Just find a cheap head to do all the work on (I've got 2 spares that I can't even give away) and swap it in. Could probably do it all for less than $500?
