No combustion on cylinders 1,2,3 maybe not 4,5 either - thoughts?

I decided to change all vacuum related hoses and gaskets on the car this past weekend. Seemed like a good idea on a 25 year old car. During dis-assembly I noticed some shoddy wiring to the fuel injectors (seemed like someone replaced a connector between the injector/water temp harness and main harness with knife connectors - did a poor job) so I decided to replace the connectors that looked bad and re wrap it all.

Assembly went smoothly. All in all I wound up deleting the TB coolant lines, replacing the thermostat housing gasket, intake manifold gaskets, replaced the seals on the injectors, TB gasket, rubber intake boot, and all vacuum hoses. The fuel rail was disconnected duing disassembly and while the injectors were out I sprayed the tips and inlets with brake cleaner to make sure they were free of debris before reassembly (don't think that would hurt them )

So I turned the key to start the car, cranked for a while (building fuel pressure I assume) and then began to catch, sounded very rough and did not catch/run on its own without me constantly cranking it. After that it sounded like it was getting worse - wasn't catching as much. I let it sit a while and tried again, if I hold the key on engine start for 20 seconds, it slowly sounds like it's catching better and better but will not idle and dies as soon as I turn the key from start to run.

I felt the exhaust manifolds, cylinder 1-3 were cold, cylinder 4-6 were warm.

After I let everything cool off and tried again, cylinder 1-3 were again cold, but this time it seemed like 4-5 were also cold with 6 being the warmest.

I didn't have time to do anymore error checking as it was late Sunday, and pouring rain to add insult to injury. Figured I would post here and get some feedback so when I get a chance to return to it I am not going in blind....

    Thanks

I also replaced the caps on the injectors, could I have damaged the injector during removal and reinstallation of the caps? (I thought I was very careful....) Are they easy to damage?

To me it doesnt sound like you did anything wrong. Double check everything is tight, sensors are connected in the proper place, fuel lines arent switched. Guarantee its something simple you overlooked.

      The Build:

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I already checked that I plugged the correct injector harness connectors together (ripped all the tape and heat shrink off )

Maybe I swapped the fuel lines?? Although I am quite certain I didn't. Does anyone know which is which coming from the hardline into the engine compartment?

My other thought (I read a post that this happened to someone) was that possibly during my fiddling with the injector harness I pulled apart/agitated the wires inside the harness where they split and go to the individual injectors... maybe pulled the connection apart?

If you're that worried about having fucked the injector wiring up you can always pick up a set of noid lights at harbor freight for fairly cheap. Basically they plug into injector harnesses, ect. and light up whenever they get power

Yes. I am now severely paranoid. That sounds easier than using the remote starter and a multimeter... thanks!

Picked up noid lights at HF yesterday for $30 with a 25% off coupon. will try to use them today. It's supposed to be dumping rain for the next 2 days though

damn. well try to have a helper around to crank the engine for you. also, don't forget to unplug all the injector clips during this test, don't wanna fuel wash the cylinder walls, know what i mean?

probably won't have a helper... guess it's time to figure out how to wire up the remote crank trigger thing I got a while ago.

Yes, I will not forget that, already had that bit filed away in my mind. The connectors are all in a plastic rail anyway... disconnect one, you have to disconnect all

Well, I figured it out. It wasn't a problem with wiring or mixing up fuel lines. I'm too smart to make a mistake like that. No. I am too embarrassed to say what I did.

I would have been happy if it was that simple......

So here is how I had the epiphany:
I was about to test the harness to the injectors to check power. The vent hose on the top of the valve cover had to be removed, so I thought "well I should probably plug the holes with a small piece of rag." And then I thought, "nahhh I don't want to cut up a perfectly good rag for that!" And then I thought, "oh perfect! I'll just use one of the pieces of rag I cut up to stuff in the intake ports while I had the manifold off, to keep debris out! . . . . . wait, what the heck . . . . . where did they go . . . . . . . . . . . . uh ohhhh.
That's right. I never removed them   :hitler:

So I took it all apart. Pulled the rags out. Damaged 2 of the brand new gaskets. Going to replace those. And I presume it will fire right up.

Now I have to make a new r3v user/profile to escape the shame.

Nope, hahaha me neither. But maybe someone will get a good laugh. I for one will laugh about it once the car is driving again
