Manuals I have seen state side play should be 0.041mm on the connecting rods, but mine is somewhere on the order of 0.2mm. Am I measuring wrong or do I have issues?

are you sure they quote 0.04mm (0.0016"), i didnt see any reference in bentley? some basically googling suggests that 0.20mm (0.008") is not too loose89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

Boy, unless I saw evidence of damage or obvious wear, I'd not worry about it.
Haynes isn't the final answer for accurate measurements... and .008" seems
right to me, just from experience...
