    FLIR gun on the stock oil cooler

    I posted this on the r3v facebook, but going to post it here also.


    I borrowed my dads FLIR gun and took some shots of mine on my 92 325ic. Engine was fully warmed up and also took the pictures after a regular drive down the road. First picture is looking staight down on the lines, one is cooler then the other. But looks like its warming up as its going back into the housing. Wonder if the exhaust manifold is heating it back up? Seconed picture is of the front as most can tell lol. You can see the feed line at the top and the cooler behind its grill. Third is the lines running under the core support.

    That's pretty cool! Does it matter that the max temp in the first picture is ~60ºF higher than the other two?

      That's awesome. I reckon the max temp I the first pic is the manifold.

          He's talking about where the target is hitting and reading. I'm guessing since the first picture is coming directly from the housing first it would be the hottest then starting to cool down in the third picture and the middle picture would be the cooler of the three with air hitting it from the opening in the valance. The oil flow comes out of the housing then under the core support then over top of the cooler. I probably should of put the pictures on the correct order lol.

              Finally fixed the pictures (was missing since the gallery went away). But once it gets really hot here in the summer, I want to post up how well it cools in a heat wave.

                I seem to recall that the oil cooler doesn't open til the temp reaches something like 350 by which time it's probably too late :)

                Other than that I think it's pretty much useless ??

                  210, 350, whatever it takes.

                  On my (admittedly slow) pro3 car, it takes 240f in the pan down to 220. In a train.
                  Free air, somewhat less.
                  Having tried it both ways...
