bad water pump? (boobie pics inside)

Dear e30 gods, i seek your infinite wisdom. a few days ago i drove through a really bad rainstorm, after that my car started to idle really rough (would stall if i didnt give it gas) on cold starts. (it almost sounded like a vacuum leak) but once it warmed up it idled and drove fine. i left it alone for a few days and after that it started fine, no rough idle on cold starts anymore but one of the belts started to squeal a little and there was a slight audible grinding noise like when a bearing is going out.

Fast forward 3 days, Today i was on the freeway and the temp started to climb fast so i pulled over and there was coolant spraying everywhere from what looked like the water pump but couldnt see since it was covered by the distributer and there was alot of steam. after a quick inspection i didnt see any ruptured hoses and coolant was a high pressure spray not pouring out. water pump seems like obvious culprit but i just replaced it like 2 years ago. could it have failed already? maybe the gasket? havent really got a good look since this just happened today and i had it towed. just need to know what to look for, if there is anything else that could cause the water pump/ gasket to fail.

I think more disassembly is in order. I'm not sure if that description is enough to go. The metal shavings could be random road debris.

As much as I want to agree, the way they were laying around it looks like they came from the engine somewhere. I'll be disassembling and replacing the water pump and timing belt while I'm in there. Just wondering if theres anything I should look out for. I'll be updating with pics after I dissasble.

And yeah she does, I had to crop the picture because rules. But she had just got them pierced.

I'd see if there is any play in the pulley for the water pump. I'd say pressure test the cooling system would tell you exactly what's up.

That's a good point, if you pressure test the coolant you'll see where it's leaking from. After 5psi, it should be fairly obvious.

You should be able to rent them from autozone/advance.
