rotating crank for TDC am I missing something? Really hard to turn

Do I need to have the car in neutral for this to work? If so, fuck the bently because it does not say that anywhere; I've read it several times over.

Tried to move the crank (with sparks out) and it will move, but with a lot of pressure and then it will slightly rotate back. If car can be in gear... what gives?

Well it's going to try to turn the wheels if in gear and ebrake is not engaged. In other words yes put it in neutral.

      Thanks Gart....

Sweet. Thanks for nothing Bently once again. (also, no DIY I saw mentioned it).

Is it possible for me to have messed stuff up by attempting to rotate?

Should be fine People push the car in gear to rotate the engine when doing valve adjustments. It helps to Also remove spark plugs

The Bentley does assume a certain amount of knowledge. If you read the DIY about locating the TDC, many will tell you to jack up the rear then put the trans in 5th gear to help rotate the crankshaft. If you have an auto then the trans has to be in neutral. It all makes sense after you cool your temper and think about the situation.

It's all good. I'm enjoying working on this car. Just slightly annoying the bently for both the e46 and e30 have so much incorrect information. Also, the Bently does technically say it is designed for people with no prior auto skills in the intro pages. And finally, the car being in gear was the very first thing I thought it was, which was why I double checked by posting it here.

Cheers and thank you for helping me out!

To avoid any future confusion, the engine should not be running while changing the timing belt - the Bently skips over that part.

              :)

Alright, one more question while I have my flame suit on....

Edit: holy fack that is one big ass picture.

In this picture, what is the sprocket I have my finger next to? This one seems to move very easily so I am assuming it doesn't matter if you rotate that one. Bently says only to not rotate the crank or camshaft which I have identified as the uppermost and lower most sprockets (tensioner in the middle left)

that is the intermediate shaft that drives the oil pump located in the bottom of the block/oil pan. there is no required phasing relationship to either the crank or cam sprockets so you dont need to align it in any special way

Nice, thanks digger. My heart skipped a beat there but then I figured there's no way something that loose could be required to stay aligned. Phew!
