    Metric Mechanic flakiness?

On two separate occasions I've attempted to contact Metric Mechanic. Once several months back I sent an email with some questions on rebuilt transmissions...never got a reply. Several days ago I called them with the intention of finding out if their 2900 Sport engine would pass Califormia emissions. I called during their business hours but got shunted to their voicemail...never got a return call.

What's with these clods? You would think if they wanted more business they would return inquiries. Anyone else have problems contacting thesee guys?

    Cheers,
    Paul

I sent an inquiry on their website, got a call the following week from Jim. Maybe someone was taking vacation or out on jury duty when you called.

They don't really "want" more business. I'm sure they have plenty on their plate already. So at that point they get to be selective with their clientele. A person asking your type of questions sends up a red flag and therefor passed over.

As for your second question, no it will not pass California emissions.

Luke, that's a stupid unresponsive evaluation. The previous posters answered my question satisfactorily, so your unprovoked attack on me was useless and unecessary. My 2 tries were months apart and when I got no response from MM I investigated other avenues.I was also curious if others had run into problems contacting them, hence my post. How does that make me a dickhead?

Wouldn't it make sense for the MM guys to put a sentemce in their voicemail that they may be busy and they will get back to you, and then actually follow through when they get time? And I left a simple question as to California emissions that would have taken two minutes to answer, they did not see fit to return the call. These guys are operating a business, and should be professional about it.

Agreed. Everything you posted was reasonable. Luke's response was disproportionate.

Calling them clods because of two non responses is a bit extreme though.

I agree...clods may have been a bit strong. I worked at an aerospace company in the EH&S department for 30 years. We had a requirement that any phone or email inquiry had to be answered within 24 hours. You never knew when a mission-critical issue would hinge on your response. That's why I have very little patience for loose ends. Yeah, OK, an e30 is not the Space Shuttle or an AMRAAM, but I treat mine like it is.

So you're saying car guys really are clods? I disagree. I have been involved in the special interest car scene for more than 40 years (first British, then BMW). Most of the shops and suppliers I have dealt with are conscientious, helpful, and timely. It is only in the last few years that I've started to run into slackers and flakes. I just hope that doesn't become the norm.

Actually, my e30 is practically a space shuttle now.

I'm going to highly assume you could get it to be emissions legal if you tune it with a standalone ECU like Megasquirt (and squeeze the most potential out of it too).
You can run your conservative map for smog in 2 minutes after plugging in your lap top.
The engine bay will remain OEM looking, especially if you gut the AFM, and you can tune it to proper fuel ratios and such to pass with the catalytic converter you'll have on there.
