Stomp test code 1261: Fuel pump relay

Been getting an intermittent code on startups, CEL would appear, car would rev to 2K rpm's, and the car would idle high/lumpy.
After a couple minutes and/or, turning the car off/on....it would go back to normal.

Did a stomp test, and I'm getting a "1261" code, which is the fuel pump relay (K7 i believe).
I tried swapping out that relay with another one, and no change in behavior.....and still comes up with the same stomp test code.

Anything else I should be checking?

K7 isn't the fuel pump relay, it's the unloader. Fuel pump relay is under the cover next to the power steering reservoir, it's the center one.

I have a dme out of a 1991 325ix (mine is a 1990 325ix) that i was going to try swapping....not sure if they are compatible....but both were born with automatics. What makes it difficult to diagnose is that it doesn't happen all the time. Intermitent (like once every 20+ times @ startup)

Im not sure if you need to disconnect the battery to clear codes but if the ECU is suspect, that's a good thing to try anyway.

Swapped the ecu's last night and idled perfectly! I even did a little swap back and forth from the old ecu to the replacement one I had and the problem followed the ecu

I was forced to swap bc it went from intermittent jumpy idle to straight dying upon startup (felt like it was starving of fuel) bc holding the gas would keep it going

Weird thing is the replacement ecu was also a blue label ecu, but diff part number. Took it for an hour drive yesterday and felt great and pulled even better than the original one.

Issue is back in a different form...

Having an intermittent high idle issue/cut off....occasionally I'll start the car and it will rev to 2k rpm and stay there. Sometimes it's coupled w a CEL for a "fuel pump relay" other times no CEL is present but the high rpm remains. Sometimes it will start right up and die. I tried swapping out all 3 relays with used ones I had laying around and no change. I also swapped dme's and it went from an intermittent jumpy idle to this constant 2k rpm. Again this is ocassionally, and to get rid of it I have to shut off/turn on the car several times to get a normal idle. My question is what should I try next? I was thinking of buying all new relays....and possibly fuel injectors. Is it possible it could be the fuel pump?

I think I found my issue. Disintegrated in my hand when I went to remove from the coil.

FWIW, I had to replace the fuel pump relay socket to fix the relay code.

update: swapped the new ignition wires yesterday, and it idles perfect and the throttle response is on point! I changed the plugs bc they were black coated, and gave the ICV & AFM a good cleaning.
