    Camshaft Identification

Hey fellas, I am wondering how I can identify which cams I have in my M20B25 engine. Are there identifying marks on the camshafts? Also where would they be on the cam? Would I have to use a dial gauge to measure lift? A friend of mine swears it has after market cams because of the idle. The fellow I bought the car from didn't really know much about the car at all as he wasn't much of a car guy. Any help with this to point me in the right direction would be a help.

    Thank you

check for markings on it? often they are the end so best you can do without removing is measure lobe height. probably just a slight miss

Stock cams have a white "K" painted on them you can see through the oil cap, but if it's a regrind, that won't matter (and if you can still see it). IE cams have a blue line painted on them.

This, although the AE stock cam (probably made my Febi) that I put in my car didn't have that K. Only original BMW cams will have the K.

Honestly though, if the PO wasn't a car guy, I'd doubt he'd have a performance cam in an M20. I'd bet you've got a slight miss or a vac leak, or something like that that's giving you a little bit of lope

To expound on what Digger said .... If you have a set of cheap HF measuring calipers, just look at one lobe and measure the base circle (narrowest end of the egg) and the height (tallest part of the egg). Let us then know what numbers you get.
