Hey everyone,
so im in the process of doing the timing belt, 1988 e30 325is m20b25 the car ran great before and once i got the covers off and started to find TDC, the closest i can get it to line up is 5 teeth retarted. it has a aftermarket cam in it but i don't think it would be that far retarted. is there any wisdom as to how i should proceed, i don't feel comfortable turning the cam 5 teeth over in fear of bending valves,. should i just scribe a new mark on the valve cover considering it already runs? or do i pull the valve cover and visually find TDC? my thought is the cam gear must have been removed and re installed differently so now the marks don't line up. it has a bit of a lumpy idle but i contributed that to the camshaft. heres photos so i don't get a million replies saying to line up the timing marks.
