    Tricks

Are there any little tricks that don't cost much in money in parts, but will add a little torque or hp? something like a port and polish.

a good port and polish costs money.. lots of money. and you aren't going to want to take apart a head and put it back together with used parts. just stick to a chip, that's about all there really is that's cheap and easy to do.

Bah, nothing wrong with used parts if they are all used. Used cams and used rocker arms go together. Maybe get new rocker shafts though...

Don't bother with the porting unless you are going for a high duration cam, headers, etc. I just don't see it being worth it on a mostly stock motor.

okay, so you spend $500+ on a port job and then use old worn out stock parts? I'm not just talking about valves and rockers, there's things like seals, eccentrics, and valve guides to worry about. plus you are doing it with a stock cam.. so there's really no point to the P&P then.

your IE exhaust didnt add any hp
more air and more fuel will add hp, unfortunately getting those two components in an e30 and making them run well is not as easy. you could try an m30afm and 19# injectors

from the way I understand it, a decent exhaust will increase the VE of the engine, so it sucks more air/fuel --> more power.

IMHO, a properly tuned header and exhaust will add far more than just chucking more fuel and a bigger vane at it.

So the IE exhaust did nothing for performance? WHY?
If get a set of headers that will increase my Performance?
                What set do your recommend?

                  power

                  .dele..........

its not that ez...........it costs money to make an m20 more powerful...and still its not gonna be much power on the cheap. Get a chip, tune her well...........headers, exhaust blah blah will make her more fun to drive, maybe more top end...but you wont see more than 3- 8 hp........the chip is best bang for buck.and a 4.10 rear.

a maf swap also helps a ton. It's been one of the best mods i've done to my stroker, that and the 4.10 diff

You won't notice anything under ~5hp change when you drive. Meaning if you make a change and get 2hp increase you won't even be able to feel it. Be careful that you aren't just adding noise which *FEELS* fast but just makes noise and possibly uses more gas.

BMW's came great from the factory, plenty of power, etc. (IMO). A better place to look is at the person in the driver's seat and at the suspension/brakes. Chip the car and spend the rest of your money on a few driving schools and suspension upgrades. Springs, shocks, brakes, etc. will go a lot further (dollar for dollar) than looking for more HP in terms of driving experience.

MAF swap & air filter (K&N) sounds really good even with stock exhaust BTW.

SS brake lines, chip, MAF, uprated injectors, big TB depending on what car you have are all good places to start.

an air filter makes no difference in power unfortunately..

I agree though, really you're better spending money elsewhere. a chip, a SSK, and suspension.. and you'll have a very fun car. another way to get "power" is to remove weight, just don't be like the people on e30tech and strip out your whole car so you can drive your "race car" on the street. :p
