    2.7 in a 325is?

I'm looking at a 1989 325is at a local dealer and he claims it has the "stronger 2.7L motor" Is that even possible unless a swap was done?

the vin on the engine should match the car if you're buying from a dealer.

The stock 2.7l is the 325e engine, made from 84-87 (88 model year had a variation of this motor in the normal 325, not 325i). If it has this engine (m20b27), someone did a serious downgrade, and went through an electrical nightmare for a serious loss of power. I wouldn't call it stronger, the reason they last longer is because people aren't revving them to 6k.

So, find another car, or verify it still does have the correct, stock, m20b25 2.5l engine.

Is there any way to tell just by looking which motor it is?

The intake manifold on the eta will be more "rectangularish" than the "i". Also, try taking for a test drive and rev it up and see where it breaks.
