    Performace Pumps

I am having some trouble with my factory in tank fuel pump in my turbo car. With all the need for more fuel, would a 255lph pump work well for me? If so, would an aftermarket pump drop in w/o modification?
    thanks

if your stock pump is in good shape, add the 255lph inline and basically keep the stock pump as a transfer pump.

they do make an in-tank version of the 255lph pumps but I don't know how well it fits.

my stock in-tank pump is slowly dying, so i figured i would just replace with a higher flow pump. Are there two pumps?

i have a 255lb pump on my car...took the one off that was right in front of the left rear wheel. and put it in it's place. I had to use a couple of barb fittings that reduced the hose size down to the proper size.

only on early cars, pre motronic 1.3 generally. later cars only have 1 in-tank pump.

My fuel pump is on its way out. I put a 2.5L in a 318i. I do not know if the performance is/has been affected. Considering the difference in fuel pumps of the 2.5 and 1.8, should I consider putting a high-performance 1.8 fuel pump in... is there such a thing?

it shouldn't matter, the FP supplies a base pressure that is much higher than what reaches your injectors - the job of the FPR is to bleed off the extra pressure back into the tank and keep the pressure inside the fuel rail constant.

I recently replaced my old tired pump with a new OEM one, and it's definitely performing better on the butt dyno. Sounds better too. I don't know of any places you can buy an upgraded 255lb/h or more in-tank pump that will simply drop in...I could be very wrong though.

I think an inline higher flow pump would work better/be easier to source, although the main issue that comes to my mind is having the inline pump flow more gas than the in-tank one can pump out. That might damage the in-tank pump or create air bubbles in the line. That is wild conjecture though, so you guys who have done so please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

does anyone make just a set of pipes in place of the stock pump, so you could just run a single out of tank aftermarket pump?

could you just gut out a stock pump and use it as such or would you still need an in tank pump to transfer fuel out of the tank

you need something in the tank - the E30s that came with an external pump had one in the tank as a transfer pump. without it you'd likely have fuel issues with heavy cornering.

Swap in a one pump tank and you will be happy. bolt holes line up and your fuel lines will work but you have to remove the out of tank pumps bracket to fit the tank in there. I put a 89i tank in my 86es when I upgraded to 1.3 Motronic
