Sweaty, bloody, dirty.... and still no idle.

I've swapped a running m20 into my 318is since my m42 took a crap on me. The m20 is from my alpine 325is that is going 24v. The only thing wrong with the motor was a vacuum leak and a leaky oil pan gasket. Oil pan gasket was fixed, and the vacuum leak never caused any real issues while in the alpine car, but waiting on intake manifold gaskets in the mail, nonetheless.

Fast foward to now. M20 is in the 318. It starts and runs as long as i continue blipping/feathering/revving the throttle. If I let drop back down to idle, it runs rough and shuts off. When I take it for a spin, at about 2.5k-3k under load it boggs down and cuts off... if I feather the throttle it comes back to life. In neutral, or if the wheels are spinning (on snow) I can rev up and down the range no problem. Under load, 2.5k-3k cuts off.

I've changed the ICV/intake boot. I've swapped the air flow meter. I've cleaned the spark plugs. I've replaced the spark plugs. I've swapped the fuel pressure regulater (got sprayed in my eye with gas, that felt good). I've swapped the fuel filter. Tomorrow I'm going to try fuel pump unless somebody can f'ing save me from wasting more time.

Havent had any luck finding this, but if somebody has an early 90 325is and wouldn't mind going over what hoses go where (maybe over the phone?), I'd greatly appreciate it. I may have possibly gotten a vacuum hose placed backwards or incorrectly somewhere.

Any help is greatly appreciated, hopefully someone has encountered similar issues.

Same problem. Runs great cold, no load. Warms up, stalls under load.

    Parts replaced:
    AFM
    3 relays (main/fuel/?)
    Spark plug wires
    ECM
    TPS/throttle body
    Oxygen sensor
Fuel pump (was replaced recently by PO)
Fuel filter (was replaced recently by PO)
    Spark plugs (PO recent)

    Tomorrow:
    CPS
spark plugs (swap current platinums for Bosch Supers)
Clogged cat - will cut out/straight pipe
    fuel filter (again)
    coolant temp sensor
    thermostat

    uhhh....?

This one floors me. I've worked on 20+ different e30's, almost all of them m20's, and I have no idea what's going on. Shit, I've replaced just about everything - what am I missing??

The one thing I didn't see on your lists were the fuel supply and return lines. Common problem really. It will solve a few problems. Running rich/lean and fuel cutting out. You can change the fuel filter all you want but if you have clogged fuel lines then changing the filter won't to any good. Check that put and report back

if it changes warm vs cold I would be looking at the coolant sensor very first, the only other thing that is temp dependent is the O2 sensor.

My CEL comes on and off - always an 0A code (lambda emissions)

It's running rich - plugs are brand new, FPR is stock from known good vehicle.

                Running out of ideas here...

Nope. But this m20 was in my sig car that I drove to my house before I took it out. There was no problems on the way over.

nothing, it just comes out of the overflow line from the resivior.

yea, i realized that was a stupid question after i posted it. although, now that you meantion it, i dont remember ever seeing an overflow provision on the m42 rad that i'm running.

Anyway, i'm taking the intake mani off now. its a pain in the ass.

Whoa buddy, we've got the same problem - so answers work for both of us. I know it's frustrating to try and troubleshoot, but it's not like I'm threadjacking talking about euro ellips or something. I posted over here because maybe some of the things I did/thought of would help you.

My problem was the fuel pump sucked up too much crap on the bottom of the tank and burned out - replaced pump, all good. Hope it helps...sorry for butting in :(
