For me it took 2 winters, but if you have the money and time, it can be done in couple of months.

Yes, you should start with assumption "everything has to be modified". The only original, unmodified part i've in my engine room is the fuse box. Everything else is remade / modified.
E28 535 radiator is a bit small, though it's the biggest one can fit "bolt-on" so that's why people use it. I got mine custom made. Driveshaft has to be modified (the 6-speed flange is much bigger than any E30 flange).

There's lots of info on M6x E30 swaps on internet, check out at least e30.de, e30tech, e30zone, bimmerforums.

yeah i've been doing my research but my experience is that every swap experience is different, so it's good to hear the different ways people get through it. i forgot i'm a member on e30t too so i'll search over there as well.

        Great swap idea

Hi there. I'm preparing for the same swap. M62 engine with 6 speed gearbox waiting. There is a lot to do about the electrical connections... CAN or no CAN on these models. I plan on taking on the machanical stuff first, worry about the rest later. The guy from E30.de seems to have everything figured out.

Hey man I just finished the same swap , My engine and trans also came from a 97 540 and I tried the original wiring, like the man said if you go with the obd 2 its a pain ,I went with obd 1 from 94 740 ,had to change the front housing ,crank pick up ,change the knock sensors ,modifly the cam on the rt side( fab a shim for cam gear) fab a spacer for cam position sensor and wiring harness . runs. very strong ,screemer as a matter of fact, but took me longer than a year but only worked on it in spare time. still waiting for a few odds and ends the exhaust is the hardest but with X5 header you only have to mod one side, and of course make the compete exhaust system back.will send pics if u want and its for sale. I only wanted to do the build for the fun of it so now ready for a new project.
