I've decided to start collecting v8 parts for now :) As much as I want an LSx, i want to stay in SM class so I am stuck with using a BMW engine.

They are not rare, parts easily available and cheap and I always wanted a V8. I'll just have to replace all the things on it first and I'll take my time to find a tranny for a good price. Bavarian in rancho want 2k for just the tranny WTF.

250/260 in 2500lb car should be fun hehe.

So, the subframe spacers aren't necessary with some engine mounts? Can clear the stock hood and all?

Going to look at m60 tomorrow

How do you tell which material is in your short block ? That part is fairly easy. But it requires getting under the right front of the car. All M60 and M62 blocks have casting numbers on the right side, directly alongside the 3rd cylinder, slightly above the coolant drain bolt.

These are the casting numbers to look for:

            Nikasil M60B30 1 725 970 or 1 741 212
            Nikasil M60B40 1 725 963 or 1 742 998
            Alusil M60B30 1 745 871
            Alusil M60B40 1 745 872
            Alusil M62B44 1 745 873

Yes they do clear but then you can't use the E34 / E32 coolant reservoir and tranmission tunnel has to be modified in order to get the package horizontal.

Am I reading the bimmerforums engine info page right? It says the m62 is lighter than an s52, does the alloy block weigh that much less?

From what I read it's not very heavy, and the important thing it's SHORT. I'll have it weighted when I find the right long block.

M62 short engine 141,370 kg vs. S52 short engine 135,4kg so the difference is not big (weights checked from www.bmwfans.info / ETK).

I think the best option is the M62B44 (non vanos) mechanically simple by still having the simplicity of non-vanos and a cable throttle body.

I have one of these sitting in my garage for a future project someday

You make it out to be such a bummer, ha.

For what it's worth my S52 E30 was a little bit faster than my friends M62B44 car. His weighed 250 lbs more and still had A/C and P/S though. We both had 2.93's back then.

An S54 will be much faster than most M6x engines (my opinion based on my experiences..). Stock vs. stock the S54 usually shows a 30 hp advantage on the rollers and torque is very close (although admittedly the torque curve of the V8 is better).

250lbs difference in weight is quite a bit! what year / model / trim was the s52 car and m62 car? have both been on the dyno?

keep in mind my whole car as it sits right now with m30b35 swap is 2500lbs with half a tank of gas and full interior.

Yeah I'd like to see a dyno on that. My m30 car right now is dead even with with s52 cars and it puts down 218/229 to the wheels. My m60 in my e34 put down 255/269 bone stock, I guess 250lb's would make the difference, but still, an m6x car will be faster than an s5x car. There are some m60's out there that are pretty down on power though, I've seen a few dyno in the 220's. Was his nikasil?

PIck what ever motor your want. Im picking up a m62b44 tomorrow. I plan on making it a High reving v8. I know that there are a lot of people that are pro inline. But its nice to see a v8 e30 once in a while.
