one guy who did a swap in Poland doesnt help me very much. He used a more modern motor also. I plan on using the ALH or AHU motors as they dont have the immobilizers. Trying to use an eta cluster to keep it looking OEM.

Thanks for the referral to Left Lane cars, I just left them a message. With something like this I know I will need help from others.

for those that dont know, the TDI can also make some power. My goal is 200whp and 300lb/ft. It will take turbo and fueling mods, but its still relatively simple once the hard part is done

edit: spoke to Mike for a while and he certainly pointed me in a good direction. Luckily, a big problem I was having (getting a TDI from Canada) will be avoided because I found a '05 passat TDI in Bellingham, which is south of the border, here is the good ol US of A. This is going to cost a lot more, but starting with ~130bhp and ~250lb/ft prior to any reflash will be a good bump in power over the ALH & AHU motors. My wallet is going to hurt, but I should be ok once I sell the 77 rabbit I bought to drive around as a daily.

      Its getting exciting! haha

Hi and thanks to 2MAN for the heads up on the TDi in Bellingham. We are in Beaverton, Oregon.

My son picked up a 1975 BMW 2002 with a dead motor as a fun commuter/project car and thought a 2.0 TDi swap would be the cat's meow so we contacted the guy in Bellingham who had the 2.0 TDi in a 05 Passat and picked it up 2 weeks ago. $2500 for EVERYTHING; wiring, starter, cluster & key (for immobilizer), etc. We will be making an adapter plate to mount an e30 trans and driveshaft and swapping out the entire rear frame and all rear components as an assembly for the e30 unit. We will make an effort to document and post everything as we go. This should be fun.

As a side note, we pulled out the carpet of the 2002 and found out who the previous owners were: Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble! Absolutly no floors left so my son is going to learn how to cut out rust, trim pieces of new replacement sheet metal, then stitch it in with the $111 flux core MIG welder from H.F. (using good Lincoln wire). Again, this should be fun...

The M51 tds swap would be relatively easy (basically same parts as an M50 swap as far as engine mounts etc. go).

Agree, i think M51 will be much easier to swap than TDi. But TDi swap is much more interesting than M51 swap :)

It would take an act of God to find one of those M51s stateside I think.

                    I miss the old BMW

Same engine used in Rover P38s in Europe. People import them all the time. Complete TDI Rover drivetrains to swap into stateside trucks. Hell, if you have an auto car (4hp22/24), ANY engine Rover used up to about 2002 will bolt up with a bellhousing swap.

I'm passively prowling around for an M51 for my Rover.

idk. My TDI could roll coal with the best of them while lighting up the fronts in second lugging up a hill. I love the I6, but TDIs are nothing to scoff at. Especially when tuned properly.

I have an adapter plate built for the Vw 4 cyl to a Nissan ka trans if you could use it.

Edit: to do the Vw 4cyl you should use an Audi 80 fwd 4 cyl flywheel and starter. It's a 228mm clutch on those. You can use an upgraded Audi pressure plate and a BMW 225/228mm clutch disk. The thickness of the disks is within a few thou of each other. Pilot bearing will have to be custom bronze or oilite. Throw out bearing will take some measuring also. The Vw crank flange sticks out past the mounting surface of the block almost 1/2". You will probably have to machine close to the same amount off the front of the bellhousing to make sure you have enough input shaft engagement into the clutch disk. Does anyone have the m20 clutch cover mounting bolt pcd? I have an Audi 80 flywheel I could measure to see how close the BMW and Audi clutch covers are to swapping.
