    TDI swap

I have been toying with this idea for a while. the biggest hurdle I can think of is how to mount it to the transmission. No TDI came in a rear wheel drive setup except for a Volvo, but that transmission was a piece of shit. I'd like to make an adapter plate and mount it direct to the g260. Thoughts?

it'll probably take an adapter plate, custom flywheel, some way to adapt/mount the pilot bearing, and of course custom engine mounts.

not really that hard, if you have contacts/resources and design skills and the ability to measure. do it!

Not all of them. Also they're fwd or awd, so those gearboxes wont be of much use...
Also not shure what is takes to convert a cars fuel-system to diesel?

I have read a guy that swapped a TDI into is toyota crawler. It probably had a W56 Toyota transmission but it was longitudinally mounted. Been thinking about this for my '80 Toyota longbed DD

Im thinking the hardest part is the flywheel. I think if I can get a custom flywheel from JB Racing (i think thats there name) the rest shouldnt be too hard. I spoke with someone who can connect me with a machinist who can cut the adapter plate for me, I would just need to sketch it. My thought is that if its a stock G260 flywheel but with the VW crank bolt pattern everything else could be OEM BMW. Im not too worried about the motor mounts and the adapter plate doesnt seem too intimidating

they are, doesnt really change much to make this easier.

Passats are unique VWs in that they use a longitudinal setup like the Audi's and yes they were FWD & AWD.

Converting to diesel fueling is easy. Yank out the fuel pump and put a straight pipe in there, though you can also use a low pressure pump like a Carb'd car. Ive done it on my VWs Ive owned in the past.

ACME adapters makes an adapter plate to mount to a toyota truck transmission and I considered this, but it adds more modifications to the mix. You would then need custom trans mounts, custom driveshaft, etc.

Ive found a few TDI setups just north of the border for a good price (about how much a good 885 head would cost me) so I am really thinking of going for it. Im buying another car tomorrow to drive around on so I wont need to rush this, but I cant be lazy about it either.

Right now, my brain is thinking about the flywheel, does anyone have a stock one they can measure? I know the VW one is 210mm so if its close that is a good start

                ok did some research...

The M10 flywheels are 215mm so those are close to the factory 210mm VW flywheels, the M20 flywheels are over 220mm. Called JB racing to see if they could cut me a custom flywheel and they said they could, but it would be between $500-$1000!!

Soooo, I took another look at the ACME adapters and the toyota transmission adapter and flywheel is $595 so thats a LOT more cost effective. Especially when I found a Toyota 5 speed for $107. I think this is the route I will end up going...

Trying to arrange to go to Canada to get my TDI motor this weekend. we'll see how this goes.

Ambitious. Eagerly awaiting the results. Putting it into an early or late model? 2 or 4 doors?

Check out HPA motorsports kit they sell for the Jeeps. They take a VW TDI engine and switch to mounting it longitudinal and works great for them, I am sure something similar can be adapted to be BMW trans.

This is a great idea, I would love a TDI E30!

Its going into an 84 318 coupe that already had a swapped 2.7i into it. The motor is basically toast now. I was thinking of going with a m52, but I will have another car that will be my "fast" car so this will be my economical daily driver.

Thanks for the link! I sent them an email, I would love to keep the G260 if I can.

I still dont have the motor yet, but I am still working on that

Paging Mike and Jake from Left Lane Cars, they do a ton of TDI swaps(in VWs) but they also play with BMWs. I bet they could provide valuable insight.
