    M30 engine removal

Anyone got any tips/guide for removing an m30? going to be tackling this soon. Obviously all sensors and fuel lines, radiator already gone, powersteering pump and aircon tied out the way, clutch slave removed. How do you go about the gear stick? I have a high lift engine hoist what are the best attachment points to get the required swing? Any tips very much appreciated.

there's a loop on a bracket above the waterpump and a loop on the back by the starter to attach the chain to. obviously disconnect everything on the harness and don't cut anything.

gear shift is hard to say since I don't know what model/transmission you're pulling from.

I have the M5 getrag sport box.

Can you get to the starter hook without removing starter?

i imagine standard procedure for the shifter. up top separate the shifter from the body then underside disconnect it from the linkage.

the loop is just above the starter. no obstructions but the firewall.

I would recommend to take the subframe and everything((engine,, gearbox)) and take it down,, really easy and install is just the same way .. lift it up

If you're going to drop it in an e30 afterwards you'll need to remove the crank pulley.
Just read your other post, you have a 333i e30, remove that pulley first to get clearance at the top of the core support if you decide to pull it out the top.

Seen that method, even without a hoist see the link. Just using some threaded stud to wind the engine to the floor.

That is one way to do it. I prefer to do it from the top of engine bay.

Ok I have the crane, do we need to remove the crank pulley as mentioned?

                  Cheers

I have done swaps with s38 and m30 connected to the tranny. I never removed the crank pulley from the engines.

Good enough for me is it just a case of getting the front chain the correct length against the rear chain?
I like the idea of take it out the bottom but obviously disturbing other areas. Also I will be doing this outside my garage but on my property, will need to put the car back in the garage after so would need to bolt it back on to move the car back in the garage.

I think I have seen some conversion threads on here showing it going it to the engine bay over the top. There was one thread where he was pulling it in and out as he was making his own mounts.

No need to pull the crank pulley.

If you do it through the top, it would be to your advantage to use a balance bar .

agreed, zero reason to remove crank pulley when installing into e30 or removing from any car.

Get a leveler and and get it top dead center with the chains on the hoist. Then set it so it's go the tranny dragging ass disconnect everything and just start pulling the bitch. It's gonna fight you and wanna take the car with it so either unbolt the motor mounts from the chassis or sit there and push on your car until it breaks free from the mounts. I never had to do anything with the shifter or anything all I did was have a buddy rolls the hoist back as I lifted the motor and tranny to clear rad support, subframe and steering rack.
