Yes splicing would be the best choice, however i say that because thats how it was done on my car and its working very well. The auto harness has alot of extra sensors/wiring in it specifically for the auto, and the DME is tuned for auto shift points etc. Im not sure if you can use it or not however depending on your electronics skills you could probably get away with it. But again i dont know how to go about using the auto harness.

Just read the whole thing, man... that sucks about you having to change bearings, and then having to do the rings too!!!

Clean swap!!! Awesome job! what is the PN on the AFM's you guys using?

            Question:
            I have an m30b34 going into my '87 325is.
I have a custom, cat-delete 2.5" exhaust, but I have to cut off the m20 headers and find an m30 solution.

A buddy may have stock e28 (from m30b34) downpipe available... has anyone w/ Joe's mounts had luck w/ this b34 exh.manifold+downpipe?
.... to give me something like the pics below?

Or, if e28/b34 exhaust won't work due to space constraints, what m30 downpipe should I seek out?

So what is the status with this car now?

are you going for the 3.9L?

I know a guy who use to work for Korman back in the 90's and he has built several 3.9L/4.0L's for racing back then...

First, you're gonna need an M90 block or S38 Block as there is not enough material in a b34/b35 to take it out to 94/95mm Bore to reach the 3.9/4.0L...

Second, you need a 92 or 94mm crank which is super costly ($2k) plus rods and pistons...

              I am planning on building a 3.8L...
I already have the S38B38 90mm crank and rods...along with the harmonic balancer
              LTW Custom Pistons
              M90 Block
B35 head topend running later motronics and a custom chip
              I am still deciding on a 288, 290 or 308 cam...

A friend of mine who is an Engineer for BMW and who also is one of the founding members of the M535i.org, Chris Graff ran some numbers for me ...

I have excel spread sheets with possible outcomes with different motors, heads, cams cranks ...
best bet is somewhere around 303 hp and 318 ft/lbs tq... at the crank..
              a pretty square motor...
so if you figure in drivetrain loss it should put down 240-260 at the wheels...

if anyone wants to see the spread sheets email me at

Hangin out in my driveway waiting for a turbo.

I ended up just replacing the bearings and putting it back in. And painting some things black...

I thought just the stroke could be increased to get roughly 3.9L. I could be wrong though...

Chris never ran the 3.9L or 4.0L scenario as that was abit out of my reach plus mostly for a racing application but the top numbers are for the 3.8L...basically an M30B38...

my buddy says a 4.0L will punch out about 350hp/tq...
and he knows one of his early engines went 100k no problem...

I'll try to upload some pics every weekend as thats the only time i have to work on it.

Looking for a clutch recomendation that can handle the new found power. Time to loose the dual mass...

A stg1 or 2 clutch from TCD should work good with a 745i turbo setup.

How much tq can the stock clutch handle?
is there a "sport" pressure plate like the m20 one?

Just a turbo. I'm also gonna try to move the engine as far back as I can and maybe alittle higher up. Unfortunately where I had it before, the wastegate hits the strut tower and the turbo hits my motor mount.

                                lol, ok now I'm good.

With raising your engine up the max you will get is 25mm in between the bottom of the sump pan and the top of the steering rack.

Thats my circumstances anyway, and the top of the TPS (plug itself) rubs ever so slightly on the underside of the bonnet.

Just incase you wanted to know some kinda random information! GL.
